Jiang Xiaofu, known as Boss Jiang, was a kunqu opera performer at the Chun Jing Hall.
Onstage, he was a performer singing opera. Offstage, he entertained guests over drinks.
Perhaps because he sang too many operas, Boss Jiang believed that only a love lasting until death could count as a life, and only an all-consuming devotion could be called true affection. The people and happenings around him were like badly sung operas: cramped, vulgar, and dull. As a result, Boss Jiang’s love life never went smoothly.
Boss Jiang was sensitive and affectionate inside, but on the outside he was merely mercurial. In a word, he was a blockhead.

When reading this novel, I always feel a slight sense of sadness, like wandering in the hazy Jiangnan with drizzle, alone and not knowing where to go. I think this feeling may come from Xiaofu's persistent pursuit of love. He wants an unreasonable love that is unique to him, but he is worried about losing and gaining. The person he loves doesn't understand him, and he can't tell what he wants.
