I died in the tenth year after we met. As demonic flames engulfed me, he stood with a sword in hand, protecting the woman he loved.
My eyes reflected the clear sky above Cangling Mountain and his resolute figure as he walked away. The chill of the early spring wind cut to the bone. The swaying bamboo grove rang with hollow rustles, and red peach blossoms, like blood, silently fell among the spots of blood I had just coughed up.
Ten years ago, that young man had taken me into his arms in the Ten Thousand Ghosts Cave, where ghosts fed on souls. He promised to protect me all my life and give me a safe home. In the end, I was left alone on the empty Cangling Mountain, which felt no different from the Ten Thousand Ghosts Cave. And just as I had once imagined, I died on Cangling Mountain.
After I died, I turned to ashes without staining his favorite white robe. As he wished, I also pulled one soul and one spirit from myself and gave them to the woman he loved.
The moment I stepped onto Shendu Cliff, ten years of devotion ended in a single night.
From then on, he and I had nothing more to do with each other.
When I opened my eyes again, I had become the Earth-Risen Goddess, who had slept for a thousand years in the Underworld, and he had become a fallen god and demon imprisoned by me in the Ninth Fold Abyss Tower.
Memories of my past life came flooding back, and only then did I understand.
Everything, from beginning to end, had been nothing but a deliberate scheme of revenge, with human hearts as its plaything.

Later, Zhong Ze fell to his knees in a pool of blood. A long sword pierced his chest. Though he had lost both eyes, he still reached out a bloodied hand and weakly called her name.
Meng Yao always remembered what it felt like when Yun Yao, reduced to a wandering mortal soul, crossed Shendu Cliff and was devoured by a hundred ghosts. She also remembered the steely heart required to kill a demon when she was the Earth-Risen Goddess of the Underworld.

[Reading Guide]:
1. A melodramatic revenge romance, redemption, a substitute for the white moonlight, lovers turned enemies, past lives and present lives, killing a husband to attain the Dao, and plenty more tropes all piled together.
2. More angst for the male lead than the female lead. There are about two husband-killing-to-attain-the-Dao scenes, so feel free to dive in. There are hidden plot threads. While the heroine suffers, the hero is generally suffering too. I'll do my best to make it better than my last book.
3. The author's personal worldbuilding is everywhere. The blurb has been screenshotted and saved.
Theme: Love all living beings, and love one person too.
