When the fox accidentally stumbled into the formation and was injured, he was about to be devoured by wild wolves when the great demon saved him. The man's wrists were bound in iron chains, and strange black runes spread along his neck. He leaned back nonchalantly, and when he raised his eyes to look over, they were fathomlessly dark. From then on, the little fox became a regular visitor to the forbidden land. He went out to forage during the day, bringing two strings of wild fruit, catching two rabbits, or trapping two nests of mice, and always giving the man a share. When night grew cold, the little fox curled up beside the man to sleep. His fluffy tails each had a purpose: one to rest his chin on, one to cover himself, and one to cover the great demon. By then, blood had soaked through the little fox's soft fur. The pain of losing his tails made him curl up and bite his front paw, his animal eyes growing dull. The little fox was barely conscious from the pain, but still whispered, “I... repaid you for saving my life.” The great demon stared at the bloodstained fox for a long while, then abruptly reached out and picked him up. 3 The little fox loved warm sunlight, fragrant flowers, birdsong, and the great demon, who always threatened to skin him but let him snuggle close for warmth every time. The little fox wanted to splash around with the great demon in the cool spring water during summer, but the great demon would only scoop him up at once and coldly warn him that if he got sick, he'd be thrown out to feed the wild wolves. The little fox wanted to go to the mountaintop with the great demon to watch the moon and stars, but the great demon would only perform a trick to turn day into night right there, then happily switch it back when the fox's eyes filled with tears. The great demon had no appreciation for the wind and moon in the wilderness. He had always been cruel and unpredictable.
