When Chen Qingqing was still Crown Princess, Yan Chen once smiled and told her that after she became empress, he would conquer the twelve cities of Yedu and give them to her as a betrothal gift.
In the forty-sixth year of Nanling, the late emperor passed away, and Crown Princess Chen Qingqing inherited the throne.
On the day of her enthronement, a messenger from the border arrived with the surrender of the twelve cities of Yedu. Two letters came with it.
One was a marriage contract Yan Chen hadn't had the chance to give Chen Qingqing.
The other was news of his death.

Rumors in the capital said that after General Yan died in battle, the empress's temperament changed completely. In the year after her enthronement, she punished dozens of people in succession, leaving every court official on edge.
That was, until Rong Zhan appeared.
People said the new top scholar was lucky. He looked seven parts like the late General Yan, and in just a few years, he rose to the highest rank of the first class and became the Imperial Preceptor personally appointed by the empress.
Only Rong Zhan knew that Chen Qingqing never called him by his given name. The blazing gaze she turned on him was always looking at someone else.
One night later on, beneath the red wedding curtains in the Golden Throne Hall, Chen Qingqing almost obsessively caressed his face and said with a smile, "As long as you keep that face safe, my dear minister, I'll grant any wish you have."
But when the night was far advanced, Rong Zhan looked at Chen Qingqing, asleep beside him, his eyes bright with an almost frenzied longing and tenderness.
"My wish, Your Majesty, is to hear you call me by my name."
Young love burns bright. Even death cannot make me forget you.
★ Reader's Guide
1. One-on-one romance, both leads have had no prior sexual partners.
2. Romance-focused, with the plot secondary. Not a strong female lead story or a female-dominance story.
3. Fictional setting, with lots of original worldbuilding. Please don't nitpick the historical details.
4. The hero is Rong Zhan. Yan Chen has a lot of scenes.
