The long-legged campus belle Chen Yaoyao transmigrates into the body of a frail little girl who also happens to be named Chen Yaoyao. One look at the girl's clothes and body makes it clear: she's another poor child who grew up with too little food and too few clothes.
She thinks things can't get any worse, until the first thing she hears in this new world is: “The enemy has breached the city! Run for your lives!”
And so, utterly bewildered, Chen Yaoyao is grabbed by the arm by her bearded father and dragged onto the road with the refugees.
Her companions along the way include her village's aunties and uncles, the butcher from next door, the decrepit village head, and her own parents. Most unusual of all is the handsome young man, Chu Yang, whom her father rescued a few days earlier while out hunting. He'd hit his head and lost his wits, and they were planning to send him on his way once he recovered a little. But now the city gates have fallen! Fine, he can be the family's strong laborer and flee with them.
But when Chen Yaoyao comes to her senses, she discovers that Chu Yang can make charcoal, purify water, and organize activities. Something feels very wrong, so she finally asks, “Damn it, Chu Yang, do you know what it means to love someone and walk alone down a dark alley?”
