Reborn: once despised by everyone, now doted on by all
I'm the youngest son of the Lin family. The first eighteen years of my life seemed almost too smooth: a harmonious family, excellent grades, a childhood friend I was promised to marry, and a few close friends.
But I was only a fake young master.
It seemed as though all the good fortune of my first eighteen years had been leading up to the misfortune of my final one. The true young master returned after losing both adoptive parents and enduring countless hardships. Ashamed, I wanted to leave, but he graciously told me I could stay with the Lin family.
But it seemed I'd changed.
I became jealous and timid, and people stopped liking me.
When the childhood friend I loved attacked the true young master, I watched the security footage, unable to understand when I'd done any of these things.
My parents and older brother began to lose faith in me. My childhood friend fell for someone else, and even my friends kicked me off the team after I made a mistake at work.
I really did seem to be sick. I no longer felt like myself.
They were all good people. It was all my fault. The footage left me unable to argue, but I wanted to get treatment. I didn't remember any of it. It was as if someone else inside me had done those terrible things.
Crouched in a cramped rented room, I swallowed a whole bottle of pills and fell into another hallucination. I seemed to be back on the day before my eighteenth birthday, with my parents raising their glasses and smiling at me. "Our Zhouzhou has grown up!"
But...
The price of growing up was so high.
It seemed my blood had stopped flowing. I couldn't even lift my arms, and my mind was blank. Then, suddenly, a voice asked me: Do you hate them?
I thought about it. I didn't. But if I could start over, I would run far away. Farther, and farther still.
[Reading Guide:]
1. The story is told in first person before rebirth and third person after rebirth.
2. Everyone is reborn, but that happens later in the story. It opens with the past life, when the true and fake young masters are discovered.
3. The protagonist is the only true young master. There are other reasons behind the paternity test and the security footage. The protagonist did not do those things and does not have a second personality.
