At the start of her emotionally inexperienced teenage years, Gu Xici met Gu Yin, a handsome, pure-looking boy with excellent grades. After a series of chance encounters, she developed a secret crush on him that lasted 283 days. Just when she thought she might spend all of middle school revolving around him, an unforgiving pandemic came out of nowhere. Love can disappear, and a crush even more so. Sometimes it vanishes in an instant.
“Didn't you used to like Gu Yin? Why don't you like him anymore?”
“Because it was the fifty-fifth day of staying home during the pandemic. The situation had just gotten worse again, and I happened to see a video. The blogger looked a lot like me and said, ‘Maybe he really, really did like you, but he only liked the feeling of you liking him.’ After that, I stopped liking him.”
Maybe everyone has someone who saves them. Before hope arrived, during the last COVID test I had to take, I was standing in line, bored, when DingTalk brought me a message from Naonao, that coward.
“Hey, hey, I saw Gu Yin's friend. Are you here?”
In Gu Xici's mind, Gu Yin's friend Yue Qiu was the super cool guy who smoked by the stairwell. She remembered that his grades were almost as good as Gu Yin's. She used to see him all the time, because whenever she saw him, she could see Gu Yin too. Lost in thought, she was interrupted by a voice.
“Can I stand in front of you? I'm in a hurry. Thanks.”
“Oh.”
That was how they met.
At the end of the story, Yue Qiu, having graduated from high school, stands outside Gu Xici's school with his diploma and says, “Xixi, I got into Xiamen University. I'll be waiting for you there.”
