The Burden of Godhood

When Cong Cang woke up, he found himself in a temple he often dreamed about. He had even become the temple's master, a parental deity who protected the people of the region, though he had nothing but the outward appearance of a god.

Still, the land enjoyed good weather and prosperity, and the people revered and worshipped him. With nothing to do, he raised animals and grew flowers in the divine palace, drank wine and sipped tea, and lived like a carefree slacker! Cong Cang thought to himself, So being a god is actually this easy!

One day, all the animals he had raised disappeared. He was searching everywhere, baffled, when a group of people suddenly surrounded him on all sides.

Cong Cang was startled. He pretended to be calm and was about to ask, "Who are you?"

But one of them respectfully reported:

"Lord Divine Sovereign, we have recently received petitions from the people. Residents of the capital have been disappearing one after another, and evil spirits may be at work. We ask you to go to the scene in person and drive out the evil!"

Cong Cang wilted on the spot. Since arriving here, he had done nothing but relax and have fun. He had never done a single proper day's work. How was he supposed to drive out evil spirits? This was the end!

He cried out at the top of his lungs, "Help! Can I quit being a god?"
