Because of the Holy Grail, Lancelot was cursed by Morgana, an evil witch from the age of Merlin: his descendants must never set foot in England, or they will be marked by the curse, lose control of their magic, and bring about the family's destruction.
And Lyra is the unlucky girl who ended up bearing that curse.
