- The present world is divided into five realms: the Divine Realm, the Immortal Realm, the Human Realm, the Demon Realm, and the Devil Realm.
The five realms had barely maintained a fragile harmony, until a great war eight hundred years ago shattered their relations completely.
Tens of thousands of immortals, demons, and devils perished in that battle. To prevent all living beings from suffering, the exceptionally gifted Moon Goddess of the Divine Realm used her divine spirit as a barrier, forcibly severing the five realms. She paid for it with the annihilation of her soul. Before long, the only demon god in the Divine Realm followed her.
From then on, the Immortal, Demon, and Devil Realms became sworn enemies.
- Yun Yao is a mountain dweller, an immortal from the heavens, a white-robed immortal lord who stands apart from the mortal world.
Xie Ye is a rakish young man, a demon who has "harmed countless people," a wolf king meant to roam freely between heaven and earth.
Because of the ancient enmity dating back eight hundred years, immortals and demons cannot coexist. Yun Yao has already been condemned for taking a wolf demon as his disciple, but he is recklessly devoted to following the rules, so he keeps his disciple by his side all the same.
The Heavenly Court forbids immortals from taking demons as disciples?
Yun Yao: What a coincidence. I'm just an unaffiliated immortal, beyond the Heavenly Court's jurisdiction.
Disciples and masters must not behave too intimately?
Yun Yao: Our master-disciple bond is pure and innocent. As expected, dirty minds see everything as dirty.
Later, with the corners of his eyes flushed and his peach-blossom eyes hazy beneath Xie Ye, Yun Yao found himself thinking dazedly that those old men in the Heavenly Court had been rather prescient. It seemed he would never clear himself of this charge now.
