After doing poorly on her high school entrance exams, Zhang Yiying enrolls in an ordinary school. Science was never her strong suit, and high school becomes even more painful for her.
Xu Chenyao, who moved inland from Hainan to attend high school, is the exact opposite: he struggles with liberal arts. The two of them, each recognizing something of their own troubles in the other, start tutoring one another.
Zhang Yiying: "Your essay is truly unmatched throughout history..."
Someone: "Thanks for the praise."
Many years later, when her thought process finally catches up, Zhang Yiying says, "You were actually planning this with me in mind all along!"
Someone: "You're not quite beyond saving after all."
