Tales of the Supernatural in Bianjing

On his way to the capital to take the imperial exams, Ning Ruoxi spends the night in a ruined temple and gets caught in a lightning tribulation. Just before the fox spirit, whose tribulation has failed, is reduced to ashes, it merges with him!

That opens the door to a whole new world.

He gains the fox spirit's abilities. He can possess spirits and hear their thoughts!

Damn it! Who wants to possess spirits? Today he turns into a koi fish that's been hooked by someone, tomorrow an old peach tree that can't move its roots...

"Huh? The tree demon said to eat people without leaving a trace? That's ridiculous! Last time I saw those traffickers burying a corpse in the hollow of the tree. They blamed the tree demon for it? Have they no shame?"

"The water ghost in the Bian River is looking for a replacement? Wait, could it be the little otter who cried to me all night the other day? It was the boatmen who killed someone and dumped the body, but they blamed the little otter. No wonder it keeps ramming their boat!"

"Another snake demon wanted for murder? Supposedly it wiped out an entire household? Wait, wasn't it that carpenter who knew Lu Ban's craft who killed the family?"

"Sigh. Even if I uncover the truth in these cases, what good will it do? The little spirits can't go to court and plead their innocence. They'll just keep taking the blame for the real culprits..."

"Huh? Wait, you're saying even the Assistant Minister of the Court of Judicial Review isn't human? He's a giant bird... Ah!"

With a hand clamped over his mouth, Ning Ruoxi shivered as he stared at the handsome, upstanding Yan Chongguang, a literal beast in human form, and nearly fell to his knees.

"Monster... Assistant Minister Yan, please don't kill me to silence me!"

Yan Chongguang: "Heh. You want to reopen the cases, don't you? I'll help you. But if I find out you've been talking nonsense out there... You know what happens, right?"

Ning Ruoxi nodded frantically. "Don't worry, Assistant Minister. I'll never tell anyone you're a giant bird monster..."

Yan Chongguang: "Good. And I won't tell anyone you're a fox spirit... Ah! Don't bite!"
