He Zhihuai was born into a distinguished family and was cold by nature. He had never shown favoritism toward anyone.
That changed when a pampered cousin from afar, Diwu Shu, came to live in his household. She truly was beautiful, with bright eyes and pearly teeth, but she was terribly forward.
Whenever she saw He Zhihuai, Diwu Shu would eagerly go out of her way to get close to him. When he turned her down, she would stammer out every excuse she could think of, insisting she didn't mean it that way.
But seeing her rosy cheeks and flowerlike smile, how could He Zhihuai fail to understand her feelings?
Still, their stations were different, and they were not suited to one another. So He Zhihuai remained as cool and distant as ever, telling her only that a young lady should behave with modesty.
As time went by, however, He Zhihuai gradually grew used to the special treatment he received from Diwu Shu.
He even began to waver, thinking of her and longing for her.
Then one day, when He Zhihuai brought her precious emeralds and pearls and went to discuss marriage with her, he discovered something:
Diwu Shu acted exactly the same around his cousin as she did around him. She smiled just as sweetly and looked just as radiant.
It turned out Diwu Shu was simply attracted to good looks. She couldn't help being accommodating and forgiving when she saw a handsome face.
She really didn't like He Zhihuai.
He Zhihuai seemed to go mad. He slashed his own face.
Diwu Shu was miserable in the He household. Knowing that her own flaw had caused Cousin Zhihuai plenty of trouble, she did her best to avoid him.
Finally, one day, she saw that He Zhihuai's face was injured. Diwu Shu was overjoyed to realize he no longer attracted her.
So she came to tell He Zhihuai with a beaming smile, "Cousin, you don't have to worry about me pestering you anymore. I've found someone else to marry!"
At her announcement, everyone congratulated her. But after staring blankly for a long while, He Zhihuai's gaze gradually darkened.
She wanted to marry someone other than him? Fine. He would force her to marry him.
