A beautiful love that goes both ways
[Blurb]
[Heroine]
Jiang Yi has a secret: from time to time, she forgets things, and her personality changes along with them.
So when her childhood friend returned, she no longer recognized him at all and couldn't remember what he looked like.
Jiang Yi spent her childhood constantly sick and dependent on medicine. Later, she found a master who taught her martial arts so she could protect herself. He also told her that if the person she loved ever found himself in danger, she had to remember that she was no worse than anyone else. She should wield her sword without hesitation, protecting herself and the people she wanted to protect.
She was stubborn and willful, and always thought that if she couldn't find someone to her liking, she would never marry. But within two months, she somehow ended up marrying him.
Much later, Jiang Yi finally learned that their marriage hadn't happened by chance. Xiao Chi had planned it for a long time. Marrying her was something he had decided on for his whole life.
During all those times when she forgot Xiao Chi again and again, her body and feelings had already chosen the person she could spend the rest of her life with.
She accompanied Xiao Chi through the southwest, journeyed to the northern frontier, and traveled across the vast land and mountains. They did so many things together, yet somehow she kept forgetting the person who mattered most to her.
As time went by, Jiang Yi remembered less and less. When she was on the verge of even forgetting her own name, someone told her, "Yi means remembrance, thought, and memory."
In the twenty-third year of the Jingyuan era, heavy snow fell in Qingzhou, turning the green mountains white for ten li around. It was the fifth year Jiang Yi had waited in Qingzhou for Xiao Chi, just as they had agreed.
A man in blue appeared in the courtyard at Lanshan, arriving covered in wind and snow. He recited a poem Jiang Yi had often heard as a child:
My lord came riding a bamboo horse,
And circled my bed, playing with green plums.
We lived together in Changgan Lane,
Two little ones, without suspicion between us.
They had missed each other, then met again. From the capital to the northern frontier, from the northern frontier to the southwest, they finally settled down at Lanshan in Qingzhou, where they stayed together for the rest of their lives.
[Hero]
From the day Xiao Chi returned to the capital, he had only one firm resolve: to marry Jiang Yi.
Ever since the day he first met Jiang Yi at the Guanyue Tower as a boy, he had been completely captivated by her. The girl who always called him a coward and a crybaby would never allow anyone to bully him.
He remembered how, on the day he left, Jiang Yi cried until her face was a mess. She told Xiao Chi he had to return to the capital the year she turned eighteen, or she would marry someone else instead of him.
So Xiao Chi trained relentlessly in the military camp, earning merit again and again. At last, the Battle of Lingyun Mountain made him famous, earning him the title of Young God of War.
Just as the people in the camp began to see him differently, Xiao Chi made another decision: he would return to the capital.
That year, he was eighteen. He and Jiang Yi shared the same birthday, and she was turning eighteen too.
He wanted to return to the capital to keep his promise. He didn't want Jiang Yi to marry someone else.
Xiao Chi thought that after earning so much merit, exchanging it for the eldest daughter of the Duke's mansion would be just right.
Everyone said he was neglecting his duties for pleasure, blinded by beauty. But Jiang Yi accompanied him back to the northern frontier once again, and he became the spirited young general he had been, instead of Lord Xiao, trapped in the capital.
When they were children, Jiang Yi protected Xiao Chi. Now that he had grown up, it was only natural that he should protect her.
Extra Scene 1
One morning.
The chirping and chattering of Jiujiu kept Jiang Yi from sleeping in, while Xiao Chi slept soundly beside her.
Jiang Yi: "Xiao Chi, go make Jiujiu shut up."
Dragged from sleep before he was fully awake, Xiao Chi was pushed out of bed by Jiang Yi. He took all his pent-up frustration out on poor Jiujiu.
Jiujiu: "These two are both awful. One pulls out my feathers all the time, and the other ties my beak shut first thing in the morning."
Extra Scene 2
During the Lantern Festival.
As they walked along, Xiao Chi quietly took Jiang Yi's hand.
Jiang Yi: "What are you doing?"
Xiao Chi: "I'm scared."
Jiang Yi was speechless as she looked at the man who said he was scared with a completely relaxed expression.
