Lang Wu rents an apartment beneath the approach path to the city's airport. Everyone says she was new in town and got swindled by the agent, paying good money for noise.
But Lang Wu couldn't be happier.
From her north-facing balcony, she can clearly see planes from all over the world, their signal lights flashing as they weave through the clouds.
"That one's departing, heading west. This one's arriving, see? It's approaching from the south and is about to land."
When her coworkers came to see Lang Wu's little apartment, she was on the balcony, gazing at the planes in a trance.
"Enough with all that airy-fairy stuff. We need to introduce you to someone. Putting down roots in this city is what matters."
Lang Wu smiled brightly.
"Sure! He has to be over 180 centimeters tall and handsome, and it'd be best if he flew planes."
Everyone shook their heads. Young girls really did have unrealistic ideas about life and marriage.

She gave up studying abroad for graduate school, then left Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou after two years at work. Lang Wu seemed to have given in to reality.
Only chasing the free birds of steel with wings at ten thousand meters could briefly let her hear the voice inside her.
She didn't like a life of toiling away, and was tired of the prescribed pace of life. She longed for the view of the horizon from above ten thousand meters.
She knew she was a naive, pitiful lover of fairy tales, an idealist who reached for the impossible.
But then, one day...
Lang Wu received a model airplane and a letter. They were from Zhuo Wuming, high above the earth.
"You appeared so casually, like an invisible leaf or branch. Suddenly my heart was filled with fruit and sound."
