It Was Just for Fun

At her family's request, Song Jinzhi goes to attend the opening ceremony of a Hope Primary School her family helped fund.

Dressed formally with red lips, she sits below the stage, smiling faintly, though her eyes betray her boredom.

The only thing that catches her attention is a teacher from the school, who has come onstage to give a speech as the representative of the volunteer teachers.

She sits up straight, staring at the slender, pale legs beneath the lectern, long and straight. She can't stop imagining them bound with a black belt.

She brings her back to Pingcheng and takes her along wherever she goes.

Their friends are all astonished. Amid the racket at a KTV, someone asks, "Are you serious?"

Song Jinzhi puts out the cigarette in her hand and smiles amid the shifting light and shadow. "It's just for fun."

She's only playing with an innocent little rabbit, willing to spend a little time and patience playing a game that looks something like love.

She's having fun too, isn't she?

Only when Chi Yi leaves without a word, making Song Jinzhi feel as if her life has fallen into zero gravity, does she realize something has gone wrong.

-

The woman from the mountains has suddenly risen to become a phoenix, and plenty of people resent her.

"Song Jinzhi is only playing with you. She'll toss you aside once she's had enough," they say.

The gentle, soft-spoken woman removes her gold-rimmed glasses and slowly wipes the lenses with a soft cloth. "And how do you know I'm not the one playing her?"

-

Song Jinzhi used to be completely confident in her looks.

Later, she would look at her naturally beautiful, striking face in the mirror with something close to hatred, all because of the dazed eyes Chi Yi turned on her in the throes of passion.

She looked at Song Jinzhi, but her heart belonged to someone else.
