The rain began falling after nightfall.
Xue Ye sat by the window at the matchmaking lounge, tracing the rim of her cup with a fingertip as she watched the rain blur the glass into a patchwork of reflections.
The man across from her kept talking, saying he didn't mind that she was divorced and promising to treat her son as his own. She responded politely, but her gaze passed over his shoulder and settled on the black car outside.
The license plate was unfamiliar, but she recognized the wrist resting on the steering wheel.
The car door opened. A white-haired man entered from the rainy night, his brows and eyes dark as ink and his bearing unmistakably noble. He crossed the room through a stunned silence and stopped in front of her.
Pei Jin bent down and gripped her wrist with such force it seemed he would crush her bones. His eyes were bloodshot. "The child... is it mine?"
Xue Ye looked up, her expression calm. "It's my ex-husband's."
He froze, then lowered his head and gave a muffled laugh. The next second, he yanked her into his arms, his grip so rough it was as if he meant to crush her into his bones.
He rested his chin on the top of her head, his voice softening, trembling almost imperceptibly. "It doesn't matter. From now on, both you and the child are mine."
Xue Ye let his feverish body press against hers, like a rabid dog sinking its teeth into her neck.
She remembered how, five years ago, after she tried to destroy herself, he had burned through his lifespan to rewind time again and again, trying to stop her before she could sever her own life.
Every time, she smiled at him and said, "Pei Jin, I'd rather die than have you."
Back then, she thought he loved her. Only later did she learn that his gentleness was an act, his devotion a lie, and even Furong Street was a stage built just for her.
The rain outside grew heavier. He was afraid that if he loosened his hold, she would turn into blood on his hands again, just as she had back then.
But only he knew the truth: this time, he was the one on his knees, begging her.
And she couldn't even be bothered to find the strength to push him away.
