Ren Li is a scientist who specializes in studying devils.
One night, a howling bat crashes through the window glass,
bringing with it a black, half-human creature covered in blood.
The wings on its back are already mangled, and its tail, covered in metal scales, is broken halfway down.
Ren Li asks expressionlessly, "What's your name?"
The half-human creature opens its eyes, demonic flames dancing in its narrow pupils.
Ren Li grows interested. "Then let me ask you something else. Are you a devil?"
The other nods.
Ren Li looks at the demon hunters outside, armed with spears and guns and ready to move.
Suddenly, he bursts out laughing. "Good. Sign a contract with me, and I'll save you."
The little devil Qing Lan eventually becomes Ren Li's pet.
He has to go out hunting and do the housework,
and worst of all, he, a mighty devil, is forced to study!
He's memorized his vocabulary for the day, practiced the piano,
done his exercise routine, and memorized his paper...
Qing Lan decides to rebel. Wrapped in a blanket and pretending to be a monster, he storms into Ren Li's room.
Ren Li gives him a cool glance, and the poor little devil is so scared that his tail pops out.
Ren Li: "What are you doing?"
Qing Lan swallows, frightened but still defiant. "I'm here to warm your bed!"
Later, the demon hunter army still lays siege to the city, gathering countless elites to exterminate the devils.
Qing Lan looks worried and says to Ren Li, "Master, why don't you just hand me over?"
Ren Li: "Why?"
Qing Lan: "Then you'll be able to survive."
Ren Li: "Hmm, I don't think so. They're here to kill me."
As soon as he finishes speaking, six demonic wings appear behind him.
Qing Lan: Shocked! My master is a devil too! No way, no way!

I feel like Ren Li is so weak. Every time she takes the lead and then has to be rescued, I thought she was very strong in attack based on the text. It's like pretending to be a pig and eating a tiger.
What is the purpose of Qing Lan approaching Ren Li?
