Zhou Zefeng x Chen Li
When Chen Li first arrived in Class A of Grade 11 at Qicheng No. 1 High School,
the whole class stared at her.
She calmly wrote two large characters on the blackboard: "Chen Li."
The characters weren't particularly delicate. Instead, they had a free-spirited elegance.
She said coolly, "Chen Li. The 'li' is from 'the grass on the plain,' as in the line 'the grass stretches across the plain.'"
Her words were polite yet distant.
But she had such a sweet face. The contrast was so striking
everyone couldn't help but exclaim over how amazing she was.
So when she stepped down from the podium, the whole class erupted.
Only the boy sitting in the shadowy corner raised his head
and tugged slightly at the corner of his mouth.
Later, the whole school knew that the top student who was just killing time and also the school bully was pursuing that "girl of contrasts."
Everyone marveled at Chen Li's ability to catch the eye of a school bully with such discerning taste.
No one knew that after the graduation ceremony,
their school bully had clutched a note
and stood beneath Chen Li's apartment building all night.
But the light he waited for never came on.
No one knew what was written on the note.
Only Zhou Zefeng knew it was Chen Li's last hope for him.
"If I may make one wish, let me hear June's wind in August."
After graduation, Chen Li never saw Zhou Zefeng again.
It was as if he had vanished.
Then, at a dinner party years later,
Chen Li drank too much and nearly twisted her ankle
as she walked along the road.
Just as her legs gave way, someone caught her from behind.
The man's voice brushed past her ear. It was only a soft whisper,
yet Chen Li felt its immense weight.
She knew it clearly:
"One day in August, she stood where she was and heard the wind."
