The Priest and the Rose [ABO]

After his father died, Vincent inherited a sum of money, only to be kicked out by his own brother and sister-in-law. Fine, then. He slung his easel over his back, packed his brushes, and set off to travel the world. Then, on a hill on a remote island, he came across an old-fashioned church surrounded by roses. Was this the dream paradise of an artistic creator? So he approached the only priest in the church...

Many years later, the couple, now experts at gathering seafood, farming, weaving, winemaking, repairing houses, welcoming worshippers, and organizing tours, have a conversation:

Vincent: Why did you take me in back then?

Father Joseph: Because of the roses, I suppose.

Vincent: All right, I shouldn't have pulled them up to plant potatoes.

Father Joseph: It's all right. As for roses, having you is enough.

After a falling-out with the pope, Joseph left the church of his own accord and took over an abandoned church on an island, far from the center of religious power. In the first year, he repaired the church. In the second, he planted a garden full of roses. In the third, he awaited the young man whose presence was more intoxicating and fragrant than all the roses in the garden.
