"I have a question," Qisang said. "Do people like me and your father always end up with unhappy endings?"

Yuanyang's angry, raised eyebrows froze in midair.

Qisang tilted her head back, half her body hidden in shadow.

"Whether an ending is happy or not has nothing to do with personality. It all comes down to the choices you make," Yuanyang replied.

All beings are equal.

Good and evil are just a thought apart.

Reader's Guide

This story is entirely fictional. It is set in the 1990s, though events may occasionally stray from the period to suit the plot.

Mystery is the main focus; the romance is subtle.

One-on-one, happy ending.

A mysterious orphan girl with secrets vs. a goofy young policeman with a maxed-out talent for fighting.

Other: This is a free story, and I expect to finish posting it on the day it launches.

Other: Web novels are just fiction. They're about telling a story, not teaching lessons or setting standards for young people today. The only standard is whether it's enjoyable. I hope you enjoy it. If you don't, don't let it ruin your mood: open a new book and start again.

Theme: All beings suffer; only you can save yourself.
