The second time Maisie Campbell saw Cassandra at Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions, she knew they were already on different paths.
She was nothing like Maisie, who was battered and bruised, and could barely say a single truthful thing.
So all Maisie could hope for was to quietly watch over her for the rest of her life.
Cassandra Warrington easily noticed that Miss Campbell was avoiding her. She was the girl who had caught Cassandra's attention at Madam Malkin's shop, seeming so different. But it was obvious that her attempts to avoid Cassandra were failing. They shared a dormitory, after all, unless she planned to sneak out every night to see someone else.
That would be extremely unwise for a Slytherin.
Since they were in the same house, Cassandra warned her that her troublesome friend was dangerous. She was surprised to discover that their relationship was even more distant than the one between the two of them.
Damn it! Why am I happy about this!
Cassandra has a secret. Whenever she dreams in the middle of the night, she sees a pair of lake-blue eyes watching her, always so trusting and affectionate, glistening with tears, making her feel protective and heartbroken. Then, one day, she meets someone, and those eyes leap out of her dreams and find their owner.
She hesitates, and cautiously makes her choice. In the end, she still draws close, giving that insecure person tender, devoted love and enough trust to melt the ice.
Maisie isn't surprised that she loses herself in that tenderness.
But the other person always thinks she isn't gentle enough with Maisie. Perhaps that's the real reason Maisie falls so deeply.
