When he took the high school entrance exam, he got into a top provincial high school, but not its best honors class. When he took the college entrance exam, he scraped into a Project 211 university with middling scores. After graduating, he became a junior researcher at a lab. For most of his life, things had been quiet and uneventful, but he had lost the spirited confidence of youth. Then an accident at the lab sent Xu Youchen back to ninth grade.
