When Gu Zhen realizes she is the female supporting character in a period novel, her mother is begging her to give her brother money to buy a house.
That familiar, ingratiating voice reaches her ears: "Xianyun dotes on you, and he earns plenty. You can afford to spare this bit of money. Your brother's different. Your sister-in-law won't agree unless he has a house. Do you really want to ruin his whole life?"
In her previous life, Gu Zhen heard those words and, unable to turn her mother down, agreed.
But now she remembers what happens in the latter half of the book. When Fu Xianyun cheats on her and brings home an illegitimate child, she runs back to her parents' home in tears, saying she wants a divorce. Her mother pushes her toward the door. "Your sister-in-law doesn't like you coming over. Didn't she tell you to stop visiting so often?"
According to the book, Gu Zhen is useless. When she was young, she relied on her good looks and luck, married a good man, then stopped trying to improve herself. Born into a family that favored sons over daughters, she never even realized it. She kept acting like a doormat and taking her family's side, driving a wedge between herself and her husband.
The author writes in a scornful tone: "Sometimes, you really can't blame a man for cheating. A woman like Gu Zhen dragged her husband down for half his life. Yu Man was his true match. He wasn't cheating; he was finding himself. Even their children would be glad their father had finally awakened. To them, Yu Man wasn't the homewrecker who broke up their family, but a mentor who showed them a new way of seeing the world. If Gu Zhen could only wake up and look back on her life, she would realize how terribly wrong she was, pushing away the people who truly cared for her one by one."
Gu Zhen wakes up. She stops making lavish breakfasts every day, stops trying to please her cold-faced in-laws, stops running around helping her husband negotiate business deals, and stops looking after her children like a nanny...
The house turns into a mess. When her in-laws glower and start throwing a fit, Gu Zhen says, "Fu Xianyun and I are divorced. Once the assets have been divided, you can move out."
Her in-laws: "What?"
Fu Xianyun: "...What happened?"
As for her mother's pleas, Gu Zhen replies coolly, "How about this? I'll divorce him and let my sister-in-law marry Fu Xianyun. Then she'll have everything she wants."
Yu Man has a dream in which she becomes the villainess of a book, deeply in love with the male lead but unable to win his heart. When she wakes, she unexpectedly meets the female lead from her dream.
Jealousy drives her mad. She rewrites the entire book from her dream, making herself the heroine.
Luckily, she really does end up inside the book, and becomes its heroine.
From today on, all the original heroine's happiness will be hers. All she has to do is wait.
