The Qing Dynasty: It's Not Easy Being Emperor

My name is Xuanye, and I am eight years old. Since ascending the throne, I have been very troubled.

Recently, I don't know why, but palace maids keep crying and begging to bear me a child.

They're too old, and I don't want children either, so I sent them all away.

I've grown up and have wives, concubines, and children, but I'm still troubled.

Recently, I don't know why, but all my consorts seem to have gone mad.

The gentle and virtuous Noble Consort scratched Consort De's face, warning her to stay away from Fourth Brother;

The kind and considerate Consort Hui drove the Wei woman out, telling Eldest Brother not to get mixed up with Eighth Brother;

The timid and delicate Consort Rong would have any pretty palace maid beaten with a hundred strokes, and secretly called Third Brother a good-for-nothing;

I'm so tired. I think their minds are broken, so I can only make them pull up the flowers in the imperial garden, give each of them a plot, and send them off to till the land.

I'm getting on in years, so it's time to prepare for the selection of consorts. The children have grown up, too, but I'm even more troubled.

Recently, I don't know why, but all the selected girls like to circle around Fourth Brother.

Afraid my other sons would be upset, I simply kept none of them and sent them all home.

I'm old, and the Crown Prince has run away. I dreamed that Fourth Brother would be my successor,

and Fourth Brother's fourth son would be his successor.

I'm a little sad. Fourth Brother's fourth son doesn't seem like a very likable child.

After thinking it over all night, I've made up my mind. I'm done being emperor. I want to find my Crown Prince and bring him back.
