Before their daughter officially became a registered biathlon athlete, Xin Lanlan's parents knew almost nothing about the sport. They had imagined all kinds of paths their daughter might choose, but never thought she'd take to a real track.
At sixteen, she packed her bags and left home.
At twenty-two, they watched her race at the Winter Olympics on their doorstep, draped in the national flag and raising her ski poles as she crossed the finish line.
They also watched their daughter's boyfriend cross the finish line. He had just won Asia's first men's biathlon medal. Facing the interview camera, he said, "First of all, I want to thank my girlfriend. Without Lanlan, I'd be nothing."
a. The main characters aren't based on real people (believe me, the Winter Sports Management Center would like that even more than I do).
b. A partially fictionalized setting. The rules, events, and schedules for the competitions are based on the official IBU rulebook (though they may be adjusted a little for the story), while many other aspects are the author's own inventions.
c. A career-focused story about young love.
d. More to come if I think of anything.
