Merfolk shed pearls when they cry. Keep making one cry, and it will keep producing pearls.
There was a money-loving dragon in the East Sea, the fifth son of the Dragon King. He had no lofty ambitions, cared nothing for fame, fortune, or beauty, and loved only gold, silver, and treasure.
His palace glittered with gold and jade, with golden horses and a bed of jade. One day, his eldest brother sent him a golden cage containing a merfolk with a human torso and a fish tail. The dragon had no interest in beauty and barely spared it a glance. He ordered his men to put away the golden cage and throw out what was inside.
The fearsome guards obeyed.
The sheltered little merfolk was frightened into tears, and its rolling tears turned into pearls.
"Wait!" The dragon narrowed his eyes and grinned. "My dear big brother, you really know me!"
From then on, his favorite pastime was to tease the little merfolk every day and make it drop pearls. He would then hold them in his hand and inspect them closely. If the pearls weren't good enough, he'd tell it to cry again.
But the little merfolk gradually stopped being afraid of him, and making it cry became harder and harder. After several unsuccessful attempts, the young Dragon Prince realized that pearls or no pearls, it didn't matter all that much.
One day, when someone else bullied the little merfolk and made it cry, the money-loving dragon flew into a rage.
This was his most precious treasure. No one was allowed to lay a finger on it!
A heartwarming, fluffy romance. One-on-one pairing.
