Synopsis
1.
Wang Lean feels like her life is full of horror-movie death flags. Every week, a blood-written "death letter" appears in her mailbox, and every night at exactly midnight, someone knocks on her door.
But Wang Lean is stubborn and nips every flag in the bud.
Isn't there a ghost story about the thirteenth floor? She immediately hauls over some cement and seals off the stairs to the thirteenth floor, turning it into the twelfth.
She hears that the locust trees near her home attract ghosts, so she promptly calls in gardeners to cut them down.
She refuses every invitation to explore a mental hospital and every application to vacation in a cabin in the woods.
Yet she discovers that all kinds of paranormal events still keep happening around her.
Wang Lean: "Ha ha. Just destroy the world already."
2.
She thought things might improve after she enrolled in a school run by a church.
But...
Wang Lean: "Why do all my classmates like playing ghost-summoning games and telling ghost stories every night? Why are all the school clubs things like the Society for the Study of World Deities, Spirits, and Monsters?!"
She joined the only club that looked normal, the dance club. Then, during rehearsal, she discovered that the members were teaching a prayer dance to summon demons?!
3.
Just when she had accepted that her school was creepy and the town she lived in was creepy too,
she discovered that her childhood friend was the creepiest of them all.
[The Real Perspective]
When people die, they turn into ghosts and monsters and are assigned to live in towns. While all the other towns preserve the society people had when they were alive, Huafang Town, the most livable town of the year and the happiest place of them all, is an exception.
While the mayors of other towns are still squeezing their ghosts for work and chasing performance targets, the mayor of Huafang Town uses her clones to fill every job in town. The ghosts of Huafang Town happily spend their afterlives doing nothing at all.
Until one day, the mayor, who had been working twenty-four hours a day, left behind a note requesting time off and vanished.
Then all the workers who had been the mayor's clones disappeared overnight. The amusement park shut down, the tourist attractions closed, and the ghosts wept outside their favorite bakery because they couldn't buy their daily cakes.
The ghosts, spoiled by having the mayor do everything for them, went mad. At last, they found the child version of their mayor in a newly built villa in town.
The young mayor remembered nothing. She only knew that she was a transfer student who had just moved to town, and firmly believed she was an ordinary human.
When the ghosts pounded on her door in the middle of the night, begging her to go to work, the young mayor blamed it on tinnitus from staying up late, put in her earplugs, and slept soundly.
When the ghosts wrote asking her to end her leave, she thought the letters were bad omens and burned them all.
The ghosts had no choice but to seek help from the mayor's capable assistant, the demon who maintained order in town.
Then they spotted the human-shaped neighbor next door to the young mayor. She had red hair just like the demon's. The mayor had taken her best friend along on vacation.
The ghosts: …
Remembering how the mayor had worked nonstop every day for hundreds of years to ensure everyone in town could live happily, the deeply moved ghosts unanimously decided to spend this eighteen-year holiday with her and help her live the normal human life she had longed for in her leave request!
The ghosts clumsily learned how to do all kinds of jobs. They also eavesdropped to fulfill the mayor's little wishes. Then the young mayor, who had no parents when she was alive and longed for family, found two fake evil spirits claiming to be distant relatives.
When they learned the young mayor longed for school life, the ghosts built a school overnight. They fought each other over whether to play the teachers or the students, and ghost stories were already spreading as soon as the school opened.
When they learned that the young mayor wanted a sweet romance...
All the ghosts stared blankly, then turned their eyes toward the "demon" the mayor liked best. "It's you!"
The demon: "?"
Reading Guide:
1. She does her own thing while he does his. They look like they're hiding their identities perfectly, but their covers have long since been blown. Childhood sweethearts, with huge mutual feelings. The hero's true form is a nonhuman "demon."
2. It won't be too scary. I made up the ghosts and monsters in the story, though I took inspiration from some sources.
3. An unusual everyone-loves-her story. The ghosts work hard at acting every day.
4. One-on-one romance, happy ending, both leads are virgins. Each other's first love.
Theme: Enjoy a happy life every day
