[Yuzuru Hanyu] Our Figure Skating Era

In 2018, Liang Jingxun, the women's singles figure skating champion at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, announced her retirement. At her farewell show that same year, she performed a segment of the Wedding March. Throughout her active career, rumors had linked her romantically with Japanese men's singles figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu. Neither of them had ever responded publicly to the rumors, and neither had the Japan Skating Federation. Choosing that particular piece for her farewell performance seemed to carry a certain meaning. Many of her close friends from her competitive years attended the show and offered their best wishes. At the 2017 World Championships closing ceremony, all the skaters who had competed in the Grand Prix Final also took part in the exhibition. The men's and women's singles skaters were paired up to dance. Liang Jingxun and Yuzuru Hanyu exchanged glances just like everyone else. Neither knew how to lift or do an aerial spin, so after holding hands and circling the rink in line for a few laps, they performed a simple spiral together. They earned plenty of praise, just like the others.

After Liang Jingxun announced her retirement, Yuzuru Hanyu, who had once said he might retire after the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and get married at twenty-five or twenty-six, chose to continue, striving for a third consecutive title and the quadruple Axel. After making some adjustments, Liang Jingxun became a coach for the Chinese national figure skating team, focusing mainly on artistic expression and major improvements in technique. Her handpicked junior teammate, Jin Boyang, was also close to Yuzuru Hanyu. Few people knew that Liang Jingxun and Yuzuru Hanyu were together. At the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, the first time Yuzuru Hanyu and his wife Liang Jingxun (who should really be called Jingxun Hanyu, or Mrs. Hanyu) saw each other was during practice at the rink. They stood far apart, while Liang Jingxun kept an eye on Jin Boyang. The reporters only managed to photograph a stern-looking coach. During an interview, a reporter also brought up Yuzuru Hanyu's fall during practice and expressed concern about his condition, using the opportunity to ask Liang Jingxun about her relationship with him. She brushed it aside with a single sentence, saying she hoped he would land his quadruple Axel in competition.

Yuzuru Hanyu won his third consecutive title and landed the quadruple Axel, making history for humanity. Not long afterward, he announced on a television program that he was considering retirement. After her junior teammate Jin Boyang won silver, Liang Jingxun ended her nearly four years of coaching and took a temporary break. In December 2022, Yuzuru Hanyu held his retirement show in Sendai. Just like Liang Jingxun, he received the best wishes of many friends. In photos of the audience, Liang Jingxun, who had retired long before, could be seen dancing among the crowd. Her movements were small, but she looked light on her feet and nothing like the pregnant woman in the rumors. That's right: she had given birth to her and Yuzuru Hanyu's son, Yuzuru Haruhi, in late June 2019. Yuzuru Hanyu never made his marriage public, so the poor Japanese media had to uncover these little secrets for themselves in the end.
