What should you do when an ex-girlfriend you parted with on terrible terms suddenly shows up and asks to get back together?
Would it be better to dump a whole bucket of water on her, or slap her across the face?
Sang Yanli did neither. She simply nodded gently and said with a smile, "Okay."
In the days that followed, she acted just as she always had.
She held Wen Zhiyu's hand, kissed her lips, and nestled in her arms.
But what could she do? She simply didn't love her.
She spoke less and less, replied to messages later and later, and grew colder by the day.
Until one day, Wen Zhiyu, eyes red, could no longer hold back and confronted her.
"Did you never really forgive me?"
Only then did Sang Yanli smile, peel off the mask on her face, and say, the corners of her lips curving up,
"That's right. I never forgave you."
"What makes you think that all you have to do is beckon, and I'll obediently come back to you?"
"You have to suffer just as much as I did. That's the only way your apology counts."

Wen Zhiyu knew she hadn't been good enough in the past, so after they got back together, she sincerely wanted to make it up to her.
She wasn't blind to the coldness in Sang Yanli's eyes, or to how fed up she was with her.
She just thought that after being apart for so long, they weren't as familiar with each other anymore.
But if they spent more time together and talked more, surely they could go back to the way things were.
Until one day,
she watched Sang Yanli take another person's hand, her expression filled with a tenderness and joy Wen Zhiyu had never seen before.
The person who had been so cold toward her could smile at someone else with such warmth.
