After her mother, a concubine in the Lin household, dies of illness, Tan Yin has no one left to rely on. Her legitimate mother, who has always hated her, immediately arranges to marry her off to a fifty-year-old man.
Just then, Fu Siyu, the Lin family's cousin, returns home for a visit. A favorite of the young emperor and a rising star at court, he is highly sought after. Once word gets out that he is back, both branches of the Lin family do everything they can to push their daughters into his bed.
Thinking of her bleak prospects, Tan Yin decides to take a chance for herself, too.
Dressed in a simple white gown, her skin as smooth as jade and her features as lovely as a painting, she stands beneath a peach tree as the spring breeze stirs the hair at her temples. She turns and smiles, captivating everyone who sees her.
Unfortunately, Fu Siyu doesn't even glance at her. He walks straight past, leaving Tan Yin with only a trace of his icy, snow-like fragrance.
On a hazy night, Fu Siyu is drugged by his cousin and hides among the rocks in a fake mountain, feverish and struggling to hold himself together. Meanwhile, Tan Yin picks the lock on a room to escape the servants searching for her.
The moment she enters the rocky grotto, they both stare at each other in surprise.
Seeing Fu Siyu's flushed cheeks and hearing his restrained breaths, Tan Yin smiles faintly. After all her careful planning, he's ended up right in her hands.
They spend the night together. Afraid he might run, Tan Yin takes the precaution of tying his hands with a rope. When he wakes, she smiles sweetly and tells him to take responsibility.
Fu Siyu gives a cold laugh. “It's not easy to marry into the Fu family. Don't run off if you can't handle it.”
Later, Tan Yin really can't handle it. His family's affairs are far too much trouble, and she's ready to run away.
Fu Siyu has no choice but to use her own trick. Picking up a rope, he says, “You were the one who told me to take responsibility. Do you really think you can run away now?”
