A Perpetual Backup

Zhong Nian was always the perennial runner-up at school.

In debate competitions, choir performances, and school plays, she was always the understudy behind the lead, never getting her chance on stage.

Even in the family-arranged marriage, she was the replacement, pushed forward only after the intended bride turned it down.

Perhaps her life was destined never to shine.

But one day, her fiance, who had always been lukewarm toward her, suddenly lost his memory.

Lu Heqin was in a car accident and lost part of his memory when he woke up.

He remembered no one else, only Zhong Nian, who had rushed over with a worried look to shield him a second before the crash.

Lu Heqin hugged Zhong Nian. "We must be in love with each other."

Zhong Nian: "Uh, that's a huge misunderstanding."

Watching Lu Heqin treat her like the love of his life, a daring idea came to Zhong Nian...

Why not take advantage of this and enjoy herself for a while?

The good times didn't last. Zhong Keyi, the intended bride, returned from abroad, and Lu Heqin regained his memories.

Mocked as "the perennial replacement who deluded herself into thinking she could become the star," Zhong Nian packed up and slunk away.

But one day, Lu Heqin suddenly came looking for her. "You used me and then walked away. Don't you have a heart?"

Zhong Nian: "Don't make things up. I never used you."
