Napa Cabbage and General Ma

The story is based on: The gentleman’s ancestor was named Gao, with the courtesy name Yishan. When the dynasty changed at the beginning of the reign, General Ma’s forces took Pinghu by storm and captured his father, intending to kill him. Cai was only nine. He had been hiding in the grass, but leapt out and clung to the general’s knee, begging to take his father’s place. The general admired his handsome, delicate features and took out a fan to show him, saying, “If you can read the poem on this fan, I’ll spare your father.” Cai recited: “He gathers his troops to free the captured king; he guides his son to rise three times to the general’s tower.” It was a poem by a Song poet dedicated to Prince Cao Wuhui. “If the general spares my father, then he will be Prince Wuhui to me.” The general was delighted and held him in his arms, then parted his hair ornament and said, “Would you come with me and be my son?” Cai replied, “If you spare my father, you are my father.” He then wept as he said farewell to his father and went with the general. The general shed tears for him. Some time later, the general died, and Cai was able to return home.
