Bold, flirtatious top x reserved, cool bottom
Jiang Shiye has lost his memory for three years.
So when he unexpectedly sees Cen Si on a wellness variety show, he has no idea why the fencing prodigy from a sports school joined the entertainment industry and became an award-winning actor.
He also doesn't know that they dated,
then broke up.
At the start of filming, he says in a strictly professional manner, "I'll give you a head massage."
Cen Si thinks he wants to make physical contact again.
At mealtimes, he insists on paying his share: "How do I transfer you the money for this meal?"
Cen Si thinks he wants to add him back on WeChat.
When Cen Si feels dizzy, he kindly offers, "Go rest in my room."
Cen Si thinks he wants to rekindle their relationship.
And then they really do end up in bed together.
One thinks they've gotten back together and smugly figures he won't need to go through a painful reconciliation.
The other thinks it's his first love and is thrilled by their familiar chemistry.
They talk past each other, yet both are willing, each happy in his own way.
Except...
Jiang Shiye gradually begins to recover his memories.
He remembers being eighteen, homeless and sick with a high fever, while Cen Si carried him on his shoulder.
He also remembers being nineteen: Cen Si won a gold medal at the world championships, then pinned him against the locker room wall and kissed him.
And at twenty, he remembers how Cen Si abandoned him.
So, one morning in the middle of their lovey-dovey honeymoon phase, when Cen Si expects a good-morning kiss,
he gets punched instead.
"Cen, I think we need to settle some old scores."
*Happy ending, bittersweet with some angst, slow burn, sickly and melodramatic. An unconventional reunion after a breakup, with no groveling arc.
*The bottom first appears on the show as an ordinary person, but he's a musical genius who will make a comeback and become a sensation. He will occasionally dream of random days from the three years he can't remember.
*The top is ill, but he'll recover and return to being an athlete. Some details of fencing competitions and the entertainment industry are fictionalized.
*This story was part of a new-author event, so there are lots of check-ins in the comments. Sorry if they affect your reading experience.
The Childhood Friend I Reunited With Became My Contract Lover
A cool, resilient pianist with hearing loss (bottom) x a sharp-tongued yet softhearted, proud, jealous CEO (top)
Duan Chou's family went bankrupt and fell into ruin when he was sixteen.
At twenty-three, with no other way out, he accepted a friend's introduction and agreed to become a big shot's contract lover for six months.
He made the decision with cold resolve, but when he saw the tall, elegant man step out of a luxury car, his hands shook with panic and all he wanted was to leave at once.
Pei Yucheng was so surprised he froze for several minutes.
His eyes roiling with emotion, he asked through gritted teeth, "You went seven years without contacting me. You sure have some nerve."
Duan Chou smiled. "Yes. I never thought we'd meet again like this, President Pei."
Thinking of how the once-gifted young pianist had fallen so low as to sign this kind of contract, Pei Yucheng angrily grabbed him by the collar. "How desperate for money are you to make yourself this cheap?"
"Aren't you desperate for company, President Pei?" Duan Chou starts taking off his hoodie. "Want to inspect the merchandise?"
Bang! Pei Yucheng angrily pins him against the wall. "Duan Chou, you, "
The other man interrupts him. "There is no Duan Chou anymore."
"Bullshit. I'm right here. If you're not Duan Chou, then who are you?"
Duan Chou's eyes redden slightly, and his voice softens. "Pei Yucheng."
"...Don't treat me like your childhood friend anymore."
Pei Yucheng scoffs. "Of course not."
He yanks off Duan Chou's hoodie and presses hard against the hearing aid about to fall out of his right ear. "You're my lover. The contract stands."
-
Before he turned sixteen, Duan Chou and Pei Yucheng were the closest of childhood friends.
Duan Chou remembers how, starting when they were thirteen, Pei Yucheng would insist that "a pianist has to protect his hands" and personally trim his fingernails and toenails. Then he would rest his head on Duan Chou's thighs and play games, until they eventually fell asleep together.
They used to be equals, inseparable.
Seven years later, they meet again in this completely unequal contract relationship. It's bitterly ironic.
But Pei Yucheng doesn't touch him.
He just eats and watches movies with him, scowls while replacing his hearing aid, and grumblingly drives him to have his injured right hand examined.
Duan Chou knows their relationship is awkward, and that Pei Yucheng can't bring himself to go too far out of consideration for their past.
But he can't do that. He's always had a secret crush on Pei Yucheng. Six months in this role are enough to make him both hate himself and be unable to stop indulging in inappropriate fantasies.
So, three months later, he decides to leave while he still can.
Just as he is about to speak, Pei Yucheng tosses him a contract. "Renewal."
Duan Chou opens it.
It's a marriage agreement.
-
Rumor has it that the most important qualities in one of Pei Yucheng's lovers are beautiful hands and the ability to play the piano.
They say he never even touches them when they come over. He just has them play Bach at set times every day.
But one day, they see that President Pei has brought along a new lover with hearing loss in his right ear and a left hand too injured to even hold chopsticks.
At a banquet, they make fun of this defective nobody.
Then they see President Pei tear up the contract they'd worked so hard to secure, grab the man's hand, and say in a low, forceful voice:
"Apologize to my husband."

#What status gap? He's the childhood friend I've dreamed of day and night!#
Mutual pining and cohabitation. No angst. A very obvious mutual crush. The top pampers the bottom a little.
The bottom has his own revenge and comeback storyline. He was born with hearing loss in his right ear and it will never get better, but his injured left hand will recover.
Theme: Be yourself
Thanks for the limited fee. It's really beautiful.
It's pretty cool. Although Gong's character is macho and cute when written, I feel like he cares too much about the stereotype of 1s and 0s. Every time I see it, it's a bit subtle, like a gender stereotype. Or does he feel that showing a softer side to his lover means he loses? Then, according to his logic, it seems that Shou has been losing to him but he only cares about not losing? I feel that he loves and respects him very much, but every time I see 1 and 0 here, I suddenly don't feel his respect anymore? All in all, it's a bit confusing, but it's not a big problem. It's well written. Thank you, the author, for your hard work!
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... It's limited-exemption-free-exemption-free-exemption-free, but it's really awesome! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! (The author will marry me???)
