Xu Yan died on the spot when an experiment went wrong and left him badly injured. When he woke up again, he had become a background character in a cultivation novel, the kind who shows up for three chapters before getting killed off.
The background character was a sycophant to a minor villain, neglecting his studies and doing everything he could to please him, though the minor villain never paid him any attention. To survive, Xu Yan decided to stay away from the plot, the male and female leads, and the minor villain. But the first time he saw the minor villain, he found he couldn't quite make himself walk away... Later, Xu Yan discovered the joys of being a sycophant.
At first
Xu Yan: This minor villain is pretty handsome, but I'm not going to be a sycophant. That's such a humiliating thing to do. Whoever wants to do it can, but not me.
Little Goldfish: Hah, men. Your little game of playing hard to get won't work on me!
In the middle
Xu Yan: But he's so cute, and he's really handsome. Surely there's no harm in fawning over him a little, right?!
Little Goldfish: Why hasn't he come to please me yet? Fine, you've successfully caught my attention.
Later
Xu Yan: Baby, come here and give me a kiss!
Little Goldfish: Hmph! No. (The handsome-man strategy really works.)
