Xu Mingtai never imagined that, two years after their breakup, the next message he’d get about his ex would be news of his death.

On the night before the funeral, Xu Mingtai sat in the Buddhist hall, staring at a photograph of his ex-boyfriend, Li Chanci, as the chanting filled the room.

Suddenly, he heard someone calling him from outside.
