During the Kangxi era, the handsome chief eunuch Song Daoyu is serving at the emperor's side one moment, then implicated and executed the next. When he opens his eyes again, he has arrived more than 300 years in the future, as a young actor playing a eunuch in a Qing palace drama.
After a chaotic adjustment to his radically different surroundings, Chief Eunuch Song quickly settles down. After all, he's an expert at being a eunuch.
Maybe it's just his imagination, but aside from his natural advantage of playing the part, he thinks he might actually have a talent for acting. He memorizes lines at lightning speed and has a great sense of how to work with the camera. The more he acts, the more he enjoys it. After finishing one production, he still isn't satisfied, so he goes straight to the neighboring set to keep filming.
Keeping to himself in one corner of Hengdian, Song Daoyu does nothing but eat, sleep, and act. Everyone thinks he's just another ordinary drifter in Hengdian. But as soon as his first TV drama airs, someone comes to find him there, claiming to be his new agent.
He doesn't know what an agent is and isn't interested in the man's talk of connections, opportunities, or help with his career. But this man named Bai Jinchi looks so much like the Crown Prince that Song Daoyu figures he can at least listen to what he says.
But the more he listens, the less he can resist his instincts. Before long, he finds himself obeying Bai Jinchi just as he used to obey the Crown Prince...
And so, at his agent's insistence, Song Daoyu grits his teeth and takes the role he can't stand: Su Peisheng. He even has to bow and scrape to Fourth Prince. Even knowing it's only acting makes his skin crawl!
After finishing the shoot with clenched teeth, Song Daoyu thinks it's over. But the ship between Young Fourth Lord and Su Peisheng becomes so popular that now it's Bai Jinchi's turn to grind his teeth.
Song Daoyu suddenly senses something is a little off. His Crown Prince-like agent seems strange. The way he looks at the actor playing Fourth Prince is just like a Crown Prince's concubine looking at the Crown Princess.
He knows that's called "jealousy," but can't figure out what Bai Jinchi is jealous of. So he sticks to his usual habit: if the Crown Prince doesn't bring something up, he doesn't ask. He pretends not to notice.
That only makes Bai Jinchi even angrier.
