Xue Yang, courtesy name Chengmei, wielded the sword Jiangzai (Shuanghua) and lived a life of bitter suffering. He lost a finger at the age of seven and an arm before he died. There were three things he loved in life: sugar, Jin Guangyao, and Xiao Xingchen. He once carried Shuanghua, wore a white blindfold, and waited alone in Yi City for over eight years, all for the wandering soul of Xiao Xingchen, who would never return. Though he had eyes, he chose to cover them with a white blindfold and feel his way around Yi City, imitating Xiao Xingchen. Sadly, all his devotion failed to bring back the Daoist who might have saved him. Instead, he received a sword strike from Lan Wangji that severed his arm and a judgment from Wei Wuxian: he was unworthy. As he died, he cried, "Give it back to me! Give me my Spirit-Locking Pouch! Give me back my candy!" He never once mentioned the left arm that had been cut off. Though he could see perfectly well, he covered his eyes with a white blindfold and felt his way around Yi City, turning a man guilty of every imaginable evil into someone as pure as the bright moon and gentle breeze. Losing a finger at seven severed his goodness; losing an arm before death severed his evil. Xue Yang had a heart too, but the Daoist did not believe it, and neither did anyone in the world. Though Xue Yang's heart was black, at its very center lay a Xiao Xingchen as pure and immaculate as the first snow.
