I looked at that familiar face and rushed toward her with a delighted smile. I had finally seen her again...
"Yile, you're finally back! You left three years ago without a word, and you didn't even come to my wedding. I never thought I'd run into you here." Happily, I hooked one arm through hers and picked up my grocery basket with the other, ready to take her home.
"Yile, it's been so long. Have you been happy lately?"
Just like before, even after all this time, she could see right through my bravado at a glance. I hated that about her most of all. With that calm expression, she asked the sharpest questions, as if she meant to hurt me...
"What? Of course I'm happy!" I kept smiling, but slowed my steps. "What would I have to be unhappy about... I'm doing just fine. You have no idea how much you've missed. My daughter is already a year and a half old! I'm happy! I was actually going to..."
"Yile, we agreed you didn't have to pretend."
She cut me off, as if shattering the shell around me. I angrily shook off her hand.
