“Actually, at first my dream was to become a respected cleric. The Church wrote that fairy-tale book, The Holy Ibu Nursery Rhymes, and gave it away for free to every household. At first, they even offered read-along services... Ahem, I'm getting sidetracked. Anyway, basically every child has heard these rhymes, right? The kind with clerics who can knock out a dozen black-robed mages with a single swing of their staff.”
“I really looked up to them when I was a kid.”
Lanze stood up. His silver-gray robes draped beautifully, rippling gently like flowing water as he moved. The pendant set with a deep blue gemstone hanging at his chest, along with all sorts of other objects, shimmered with powerful magic in magical sight.
“Being a mage was never even on my list of career options.”
His student, Emma Jones, was beside him, scribbling furiously. Or rather, she was directing the other seven magic pens to record and expand everything at breakneck speed while she slacked off.
When he caught her, her teacher delivered a solid flick to her forehead.
“What happened after that? After all, you're a legendary mage now, the God of Magic!”
“By then, I was already a mage, wasn't I? And I had another dream: to be a protagonist. A protagonist can't exactly be a villain...”
“Actually, they could... Fine, the protagonist can't be a villain.”
“So I had to turn mages into a normal profession that a protagonist could have.”
