A Slap

Zhou Yilan is having dinner with her coworkers and playing Truth or Dare. Her hand slips, and she accidentally calls her ex-wife instead of the friend she meant to call. "Yilan?" The call is answered immediately, so she has no choice but to steel herself and pick up. On the phone, her ex-wife speaks softly, just like before: considerate, tender, and with the special care of someone older. That familiar voice, long missed, flows gently into her ear over the phone and takes her back to the years when they were passionately in love. Her chest feels tight, and the alcohol leaves her thoughts hazy. So why did they break up in the first place? Zhou Yilan grips her phone and stares down at the shifting lights on the floor, momentarily dazed. She wonders silently. She can't seem to remember. It isn't until she leaves the restaurant, gets into her ex-wife's car, and is pulled onto her lap that a slap suddenly brings it all back.
