Gu Wen and Shen Mingzhi were born on the same day, in the same month and year. They live across the street from each other, and were classmates from kindergarten through high school. They played together from the time they first learned to toddle in diapers. They've known each other for twenty-four years, childhood friends who grew up together, innocent and inseparable.
Shen Mingzhi is the kind of perfect child parents point to as an example. Coming first in the whole school is routine for him, and he got into Capital University with the highest score in the city on the college entrance exam.
Gu Wen is his complete opposite. As a child, she climbed walls and trees, teased cats and dogs, never did her homework, paid no attention in class, and couldn't answer a thing on exams. She might simply have been a poor student with a mischievous streak, but then she had the misfortune of having a "perfect specimen" like Shen Mingzhi around. She grew up listening to the neighbors compare them, and came to hate him intensely.
But no matter how much she hated him, Shen Mingzhi always followed quietly behind her without complaint, becoming a clingy nuisance she could never shake off.
Their friends all think they're following the classic childhood-friends-to-sweethearts plot. Gu Wen tears up the script, stamps on it, and declares firmly that rabbits don't eat the grass by their burrows.
Later, the rabbit hops from one burrow to another, but that same patch of grass always grows nearby. Since she can't get away from it, she might as well eat it.
"Rabbits don't eat the grass by their burrows. But I'm not a rabbit."
Much later, at last, when Shen Mingzhi is twenty-five, he marries the girl he has loved for ten years, the girl he has protected since they were children.
A loyal childhood friend who's both wolfish and cuddly vs. a girl who hates her childhood friend, then falls for him after all
