Zhi Mian first met Xu Chengzhou at the gate of her new school.
The boy straddled a motorcycle, one leg hanging over the side. His features were bold and striking, and a carefree smile tugged at his lips. Every smile and movement spoke of youthful arrogance.
He was the school's most famous prodigy, as well as its most notorious rebel. Countless girls had pursued him, only to leave disappointed. Zhi Mian was warned to stay away if she could, lest she trap herself and ruin her future.
But no matter how hard Zhi Mian tried to avoid him, in the end, she couldn't.

After the college entrance exams, their class held a graduation party. Her friends egged Zhi Mian on to confess her feelings.
She summoned her courage and slowly edged toward him, only to be playfully shoved into his arms by a crowd of classmates. Cheers erupted around them. Her cheeks flushed scarlet. He loosely wrapped one arm around her back, laughing softly and carelessly in the dim light.
"You like me?"
Zhi Mian's heart thundered. Before she could answer, he laughed and said, "What a shame. I don't like plain girls."
And so Zhi Mian's entire youth came to an unrequited end.

Many, many years later, while sorting through her husband's old belongings, Zhi Mian happened to find an old note tucked inside a book.
The date was the day of their graduation party, when they were eighteen. Time and water stains had turned the paper a pale yellow, and the boy's handwriting was rushed and smudged.
"If that phone call had come just a few minutes later, just a few minutes,
I could have said those words before her.
Even if only for a second, I could have made her mine."
