Bungo Stray Dogs: A Guide to Observing Nonhumans

A certain being found Xia Xia 2,333 photos and asked her to pick one to live with. To help her rediscover her passion, it used a heartbeat mode.

Ninety-nine-point-nine percent of the beings in those photos had humans on their menus, and every single one was a vicious nonhuman.

Yasaka Xia Xia chose the one who looked most human, and every day she wondered what huge conspiracy might be lurking beneath his kind exterior.

There was no way a nonhuman like that would hide out in an utterly ordinary company unless he was planning to destroy humanity.

She was terrified when he handed her an unidentifiable cut of meat, still steaming.

...She heard a neighbor had died.

He said his partner, the mackerel, had defected. His relaxed expression made it seem like something wonderful had happened, while the thick red liquid swirling in his wineglass looked like surging blood.

It was a threat. That frail-looking fellow wrapped in bandages had definitely already been served as a snack with the drinks. The mackerel he kept mentioning was the obvious hint.
