Lan Yuan fell through a rift in space and time into a small world. He broke someone's heart, was stabbed through the heart by that person, then unexpectedly came back to life in the body of that person's beloved disciple. To get back home, he has to keep pretending to be the original owner's lovesick devotee, while struggling to discover and cultivate new talents who can ascend, so he can take advantage of the Heavenly Ladder.
This time, though, he'd learned from his past failure and wouldn't put all his hopes in one person. Instead, he took on three disciples.
His first disciple was born into a lowly family but had heaven-defying talent, and his cultivation advanced at a frightening pace. But halfway through, his beloved disciple suddenly grew lazy.
He even said tenderly, "This disciple asks for no great path. I only want to stay by Master's side for the rest of my life."
Great. His eldest disciple only had love on the brain. He was probably a lost cause. He'd have to find someone more determined.
His second disciple also had excellent talent, and was blind and resentful of everyone. But after Lan Yuan went to great lengths to help him reach the pinnacle of cultivation, the guy took a crooked path too.
"Master? I've been using you all along. Did you think I didn't know about the things between you and my father? If he could do it, why can't I?"
He hadn't expected his second disciple to harbor such shocking thoughts in private. But Lan Yuan would simply give up on any disciple who lacked ambition.
His third disciple was a little less talented than the first two, but he was persistent and refused to be outdone, making him a decent candidate. Yet only a few days after Lan Yuan brought him back, the disciple revealed his true motives.
"Master, I'll treat you better than that guy Wang Qing ever did. Why don't you come with me to the Demon Realm and enjoy yourself?"
Lan Yuan thought it over carefully, then asked him seriously, "Can you promise to keep working hard at cultivation until you successfully ascend?"
The young man had come to pick a fight with Wang Qing, after all. Once the person in question appeared, he didn't answer Lan Yuan's question at all. And his former lover's reaction to seeing him was nothing like Lan Yuan had imagined.
"Does Yuan'er like them now... or does he like his master?"
A vague sense of dread crept over him. Sweating nervously, Lan Yuan gazed at his former lover with feigned shyness. "This disciple's feelings for Master are as clear as the sun and moon."
"Then surely Yuan'er would rather help Master break through to the Deity Transformation stage and ascend to the Upper Realm as soon as possible?"
Lan Yuan's eyelid twitched. How was he supposed to help? Let Wang Qing stab him again? He was just about to politely refuse when he noticed the other man staring at him with narrowed eyes. Lan Yuan caved. "This disciple is, of course, willing..."
Before the Dual Cultivation Ceremony, all three disciples suddenly came to tell him he absolutely mustn't agree. Otherwise, his ruthless old lover would kill him to prove his Dao, and his body and soul would be destroyed. Thinking his identity had been exposed and he'd have to die all over again, Lan Yuan panicked and packed his things to flee in the middle of the night.
But the other man never came after him in person. Instead, he sent someone over and passed along a message revealing a startling fact: "Actually, we have a child."
Lan Yuan looked at the little one before him, whose features blended his own with those of his old lover. The child looked timid, with tears in his eyes. A belated wave of guilt surged through Lan Yuan. "I really am awful..."
The love interest's perspective: His intended Dao companion, who had always devoted himself wholeheartedly to him, suddenly wanted to break things off. He refused, and in his rage lost control and hurt him. He then endured a thousand years of monk-like torment, waiting to reunite with him. Instead, the ones who showed up were his three grand-disciples, each in turn trying to steal his man right under his nose.
Wang Qing, gripping his life-bound sword and brimming with killing intent, forcibly emerged from seclusion. He first tried to coax and then coerce Lan Yuan into marrying him at once, but the three grand-disciples got in the way first, and Lan Yuan fled the wedding.
"So you really do like younger men... Fine." He took an unconventional and dangerous approach, aiming straight for the heart of the matter.
Before you read:
1. No male pregnancy. It's all Wang Qing's scheme.
2. The sword through the heart wasn't meant to kill Lan Yuan. There were reasons behind it, and it was all a misunderstanding.
Theme: True love is one of a kind.
