The Buddha says:
The Buddha speaks of the Other Shore,
where there is no birth or death,
no suffering or sorrow,
no desire or yearning.
It is a land of bliss where all pain and grief are forgotten.
The Manjusaka,
beyond the Three Realms,
outside the Five Elements,
grows on the far bank of the River of Weak Waters.
It has neither stem nor leaves,
only brilliant crimson blooms.
The Buddha says this is the flower of the Other Shore.
The flowers bloom without leaves,
the leaves grow without flowers.
They long for and cherish each other, yet can never meet.
That night, we met in a dream.
You were a red flower of the Other Shore,
and I was a white lotus without roots.
My heart was still as water,
my heart sank like stone,
my heart broke with pain,
my heart died, beyond hope.
Again and again, I watched flowers and leaves pass each other by.
At the ferry crossing by the River of Three Crossings, I stood alone in the darkness of the netherworld.
You gave me a faint smile.
The dark waters of the underground river flowed gently.
There was no escape from the tribulations fate had in store for me.
I am still alive,
adrift in the cycle of reincarnation, with no control over my fate.
Author's note: Manjusaka. In Japanese flower language, it means "sad memories"; in Korean flower language, it means "longing for one another."
The Manjusaka, also known as the flower of the Other Shore, is generally believed to grow beside the River of Three Crossings, guiding the dead onward.
The flower blooms on the far shore.
When the flower blooms, there are no leaves;
when there are leaves, the flowers are gone.
Flowers and leaves never meet, forever out of step.
