After enlisting, Xiao Yibei meets a giant. The giant is named Cui Xianchen. He's the chief instructor for recruit training and the youngest general on Gamma Star. Xiao Yibei admires him greatly. He tries to get close and show his affection several times, but for some reason Cui Xianchen always rebuffs him. Xiao Yibei is heartbroken. During a training exercise, Xiao Yibei accidentally falls into a gorge. The giant who has always seemed to hate him jumps down after him. At the bottom of the ravine, Xiao Yibei sits on a rock while Cui Xianchen kneels to bandage his ankle. Xiao Yibei says lightly, "I always thought you hated me." Cui Xianchen is silent for a moment, then asks hoarsely, "Do you know about perfect matches?" Giants reach adulthood at thirty, and around forty they begin to experience false bonding heat. Symptoms vary from person to person and may include headaches, mood swings, and aggression. A perfect match is a human who can release special pheromones that ease or eliminate the symptoms of false bonding heat. Xiao Yibei tells him what he knows. Cui Xianchen says, "You don't know the whole story." Xiao Yibei asks, "What else is there?" "Those pheromones make giants dependent on the person who produces them. The stronger the giant, the greater the dependence." "Oh. But what does that have to do with you not wanting me near you?" Cui Xianchen lifts his face. Only then does Xiao Yibei notice the veins bulging on his forehead and neck, and his bloodshot eyes. Cui Xianchen says, "You're my perfect match. I kept my distance... because I didn't want to scare you away."
