In Astronomy, there's a concept called the Roche limit. A planet and its satellite are drawn closer and closer by gravity, but there is a minimum safe distance between them. Once they cross the Roche limit, tidal forces tear the satellite apart. The shattered planet then turns to stardust, gradually gathering around the planet and forming a ring that encircles it.
