(Please don't confuse this with the real people. The characters and setting mean some things may be a little out of character, but I'll do my best to keep them true to character.) In short, a deceptively gentle master originally plans to raise his little disciple carelessly, following the principle that a master can show the way, but cultivation is up to the individual. But then he discovers that his disciple is delicate and soft, not someone he can raise carelessly, so he has to lavish care on him instead. In the end, he raises himself right out of the picture.
