Set in a cyberpunk-like future, supernatural abilities are beginning to emerge, chaos reigns, and the barriers between the inner and outer worlds are rapidly dissolving.
As a descendant of the first generation of awakened interstellar immigrants, Song Junruo responds to government policy and secretly joins an organization of people with supernatural abilities. In every investigation and official operation, the evidence points to the same thing: beyond the reach of sunlight, a seemingly peaceful and harmonious society harbors dark creatures intent on preying on humanity.
Song Junruo stares at the grotesque corpses of the creatures. "What are these things?"
A supporting character: "Parasitic fungi, parasitic worms, parasitic sea monsters... Call them whatever you like. They consume the brain and take over the mind. Given enough time or opportunity, they'll eventually reach their ultimate evolutionary form.
"Immersive games can connect reality and virtuality, truly making it possible for the mind to create a world. That makes them the perfect tool for invading the human world. Once an immersion pod connects to the brain's nerves, the creatures can break through the brain's defenses from the inside."
Song Junruo holds her breath. After a long pause, she says, "S-so... their target is humanity."
As a thunderstorm approaches, evil forces from the virtual world covet reality, using immersive technology to drag tens of millions of people into an endless nightmare.
This nightmare is known as the Fallen Lands.
Song Junruo steps out from behind a supercomputer, weapon in hand, her gaze cold and her eyes full of scrutiny and complicated emotions. She aims at her boyfriend. "Kill people and destroy the world? You'll have to get past me first."
Song Junruo: with a physique strengthened to the point where she can uproot a willow by its roots, explosive combat ability, and exceptional intelligence, versus Jiang Yin: a genius who has mastered the tech tree, a helpless fool in everyday life, cold-faced and cold-hearted.
Technology advances by leaps and bounds, laws grow more perfect, and society becomes ever more developed. Yet the barriers between social classes remain difficult to climb, weighing on Jiang Yin like a mountain.
Just then, the creature's beguiling voice sounds in his heart: "Revenge is easy, actually."
Jiang Yin abruptly raises his head.
The creature says, "Of course... what can you offer me in return?"
Jiang Yin turns his gaze toward the three-dimensional advertisements for immersive games, projected everywhere.
The creature says, "How convenient. You happen to have exactly what I want."
Even while worrying about the world's crisis, Song Junruo is still an ordinary person fretting over her love life. She wears many hats: she's not only a student struggling to graduate and stuck repeating a year, but also the organization's obedient yet rebellious ace, and a stubborn, headstrong problem daughter in her parents' eyes.
Operations Department Director: The organization will arrange a marriage for you.
Song Junruo: I already have a boyfriend. Thanks for your concern.
Professor Li: I want you to keep a close eye on Jiang Yin.
Song Junruo: Dating the target is inappropriate. I think I should resign.
Kong Wenlan and Song Mohui: You two aren't right for each other.
Song Junruo: A relationship only needs one person to be beautiful. Jiang Yin is perfect for the job.
Later, Song Junruo realizes she did nothing wrong. As it turns out, saving her boyfriend is the same as saving the world.
Theme: Love can save the world.
